  • Multiclip with HD and SD Footage?

Posted by Adam Schoales on September 26, 2009 at 12:10 am

Alright… firstly before everyone berates me for mixing and matching differing formats (HD and SD) let me assure you… yes I know. But im a student and I takes what i can gets and what I can gets is my camera (AVCHD) and my friends camera (SD MiniDV).

We shot a friends concert the other night and I wanted to do a multiclip edit, but when I tried to do it Final Cut told me that you can’t do a multiclip file with differing frame sizes.

So what’s the best course of action here? I planned on cutting this stuff IN SD, and burning to DVD so I guess I could make a SD version of my Pro-Res (proxy) footage, but when I output to the web for previews and stuff I was intending on going the HD route (since “HD online video looks much nicer than “SD” online video).

Since this really is my first time using HD in my workflow I’m a little at a loss for how to handle it. Can I edit in SD and then once I’ve got my edit locked switch everything to HD (with the HD footage in HD and the SD just being scaled up)? Is that even possible? I imagine it would be since I’ve heard of people using low-res to cut and then bringing in full-res HD just before they do their final export.

Any help anyone can offer would be great.

    Cheers!

    Adam,

I’m not berating you, just letting you know that your question is no different from someone asking how to mix pickles and chocolate in a way that tastes good, especially since chocolate tastes so good on its own. It just isn’t gonna happen.

You have to make a decision to either up-res the SD material or down-res the HD, knowing that they will never look alike and that one or the other will suffer.

There’s no magic that save your day, so just make a choice and proceed. This is the price a person has to pay in this situation, and it’s better you learn it as a student than later on when you’re a working professional.

Or get ahold of PLURAL EYES for FCP and sync what you have automatically. And convert your footage later.

I’m fully aware that they’ll never look alike, and I’m more than willing to Downscale HD to edit/go to DVD and UPSCALE the SD for use on the web. That’s no problem. I’m accepted that.

BUT I want to know is how I go about DOING so so that final cut will play nicely. Do I use quicktime? Do I use Compressor? What settings? Etc. THATS the problem I’m more concerned about.

I will also give that pluraleyes a look. sounds like a cool little app!

[Adam Schoales] “Do I use Compressor?”

    Yes

    [Adam Schoales] “What settings?”

Whatever settings will match your other footage. Make sure that the codec, frame size, frame rate and audio bit rate all match exactly.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

okay I think that shouldn’t be too tough… just one quick Q:

since the DV footage is anamorphic DV its 720×480 displayed at 853×480. What do I tell compressor to encode as? do i say 720×480 and use the anamorphic flag (i presume theres a way to do so).

    Thanks.

Also, one more thing… since I imported my AVCHD Pro-Res Proxy, should I re-import at the full Pro-Res BEFORE I convert down to SD?

It’s a real shame cause the HD stuff looks SO GOOD but the SD doesn’t when it’s blown up (the red light doesn’t help) and the HD stuff dropped into a SD sequence doesn’t look as good as it should

    🙁

if only i had two of these cameras.

Next time you’re in New York, you must go to Roni-Sue’s Chocolate in the Essex Market on the Lower East Side. Roni-Sue has successfully made chocolate truffles with pickles- garlic pickles from Guss’ Pickles. They’re not for everyone, but they were surprisingly good. Not a regular item, though. She also does bacon truffles.

Afterwards, you should go to Katz’ deli for a pastrami sandwich that may very well change your life.
