  • Multiclip with 1280×720 clips

Posted by Nicholas Montgomery on May 13, 2010 at 8:37 pm

    Hi all

I’m trying to set up a multiclip sequence using 1280×720 footage. Is this not supported by FCP? Because I’m missing the playback settings on my sequence, the sign that my dimensions are not supported.

If not, then would I have to run the clips through Compressor/MPEGStreamclip to change the dimensions to 720×480, edit in a multiclip sequence, then export through Compressor, restoring the dimensions back to 1280×720?

    What codec is your footage?

Is it DVCPRO HD? Then its 960 x 720…unless you captured via HD-SDI as ProRes or Uncompressed…then its 1280 x 720.

Is all the footage you are trying to multiclip the same? Be advised that you cannot mix frame sizes or frame rates in a multiclip.

Also…if its h.264 or some other non-RT codec, then you need to convert it to work properly in FCP.

Footage was originally shot DVCPRO HD and XDCAM EX. Same framerates, same sizes. Cut in Sony Vegas, each angle exported out as .m2t (not sure as to the specifics of how this step was done, what settings were used), each clip run through MPEGStreamclip to convert to .mov, each one’s dimensions coming out as 1280×720.

    .mov is not a codec.

What does it say in the Browser under ‘compressor’ for the media?

Wow that is a lot of work to get you footage into FCP.

Saying you convert the files to .mov, is like saying I have a car, what type of car is it. What is the codec, that maybe the issue.

For multicam everything needs to match, codec, resolution or frame rate.

I realize .mov is not a codec, just explaining the steps I took. Was given m2t’s, changed them into mov’s.

I used Apple Motion JPEG A to convert them.

[Nicholas Montgomery] “I used Apple Motion JPEG A to convert them.”

This is why its not working. This is not a supported codec.

Convert to ProRes or DVCPROHD instead.

Aha! Wonderful, thank you both for the advice. I really appreciate it.
