Multiclip subclip?
Posted by Jamie Mac on October 25, 2007 at 4:24 pmIs it possible to make subclips from Mutliclips? For example i have 3 cams synced but now from that clip i want to break it down into little clips of their own. Any help would be gratefully received.
Cheers

October 25, 2007 at 7:08 pmUnfourtunately no, there is no way to make a subclip with multiclip. A work around I tried was to load the clip in the viewer set ins/outs and drag it back to a bin and rename it. However you can not append a name on to a multiclip (well you can but once you switch angles that name gets lost).
The only work around I have found is to create subclips and then multiclip those together. An easy way (easy being a loose term here) is to take your master clips, select them all and right click, choosing “Create Multiclip sequence” This will line up you clips via timecode in a timeline. Then, you choose you cut points so that your ins match, double click each broken clip to load it in the viewer, Command+U to sublcip (this is where you need to name the clips). Now you have your pieces to multiclip, sort by Media Start and they should all match up.
I know it’s a long way around, but it works. I have continually asked Apple if/when they are doing anything about this, but to no avail. It was my biggest hope for Studio 2 but nothing. Otherwise, I love the Multiclip functionality.
Hope this helps,

October 25, 2007 at 7:21 pmWill try these out when i get a spare mo. Agree with the multiclip function, love how you can slip things in sync afer multi clip is made, something you could never do on the aivd. Thanks so much for quick response. Cheers

October 25, 2007 at 7:29 pmOh that reminds me, the slip function is the one problem with this method. FCP uses the whole clip when is sliding and can mess up the multiclip. I end up with black where the rest of the master clip would be. Hard to explain, but if you try this method out, I would test that before you go to far to make sure it will suit you. Good luck.

December 27, 2007 at 9:10 amHi Christian,
My name is Aaron, I saw a response to a posting on creativecow.com in the fcp forum and it looks like you know a lot about the multiclip function in fcp 6. I am a fairly new user, am having some problems with the function, and was hoping you might help me with a very brief workflow of how to accomplish this basic task…
Take two clips from a two camera shoot and an audio track recorded to a separate device (with unmatching timecode so I have been syncing by the slate) and create a working multiclip.
Do you sync and merge the audio track with both video clips individually, then create a multiclip? Sync audio with only one video track, then create a multiclip?
At what point do you assign the “angle” to each clip? After it’s been synched/merged with the audio clip or before? Or both? Every way I try it I seem to have some problem, either with losing sync or with not being allowed to drag my audio into the timeline. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong and thought you might be able to help. If you have a moment, I sure would appreciate it. I’m pretty familiar with the terminology, so a very quick outline of the workflow would do the trick I think. Hope you can help. And thanks for reading.
Aaron
