    Hi,
Does anyone know of a way to change the viewable angles in the viewer for all instances in a timeline. At the moment, when editing with more than 16 cameras, after editing the first pass of cameras you then have to go through each edit in the timeline with open gang on and change the viewable angles in the viewer. It would be great to park on the first edit, change the angles selected in the viewer and have those selected angles pulled up by open gang for every edit in the sequence, like Avid does. When you’ve got 20 – 30 cameras, as I often have on a big concert shoot, it gets very tedious changing every edit’s selection three or four times for each song in order to see every camera.
This is a hard one to explain, I hope it makes sense. If you edit big multicamera jobs on avid you’ll know exactly what I mean. I have enquired and fedback about this problem about a year ago but have had no successful responses.

Thanks, hope someone can help / rewrite the software!

16 is the maximum load in the Viewer at one time.

You can’t see more than 16 cameras at a time, however you can choose which 16 you want to see by dragging the angles in the Viewer to show you the 16 you want to see. You can do this by command clicking an angle and dragging it to a new position.

    Hi,
Thanks guys, I knew I hadn’t explained it very well! I don’t actually want to see any more than 16 at a time, you’d have to have eyes of a fly to see all those at once! I need to edit the first 9 of the group and then go through the edit again with the next 9 etc. If you reaarange the group it doesn’t affect all the instances of the group already edited into the timeline, or at least I can’t find a way of making it do that without going to every edit and rearranging that instance of the group. Without doing that, playing the sequence with open gang on just pulls up the arrangment of that instance as it originally was.
I hope that makes more sense! It;s easier to show someone than to write it down!

I understand. Basically you can’t do live switching with the second pass. Live switching is for one time use only. Once you’ve made the first cut, you have to go back through with subsequent passes with the playhead ganged and use the keyboard shortcuts or buttons to either switch shots or to add more cuts.

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for the reply – Yes that’s what I’m trying to do, a live cut on the first pass and then go through the cut with the open gang on to see what’s happening on the other cameras, using the keyboard to cut or switch them in. The trouble is without changing each edit’s selected angles in the viewer first you can’t see the other cameras. On Avid you just change the angle arrangment in the group and the sequence references that new arrangement for all edits but FCP references a different arrangment for each edit. It’s really hard to explain without actually having a go, and I’m sure you’ve got better things to do! It’s kind of a vital function for editing big multicam jobs as it gets embarrassing when the director wants to, say, check the wides on a song and he has to sit there while you rearrange the groups for a couple of hundred edits first! I’m just hoping somebody knows a trick or someone at Apple can implement a “change angles for all selected instances” feature.
Thanks for your thoughts, if you get time have a go and see if I’m missing something!
    Cheers,
    Reg

After the first pass in the Viewer you scroll down to the second set of angles. Instead of setting playhead sync to open, you simply put the playhead the beginning of the viewer and the timeline and set playhead sync to gang. The playheads move together and you should see the multiclip in sync in the viewer with the second set of angles. You cut and switch in the timeline using the viewer as a reference. Is that not working for you?

Just to add you really have to scrub the timeline ruler for this to work properly. You can play, but you have to stop and start. It’s not ideal by any means.

Ohhh I got all excited then , that sounded like a solution! Unfortunately I just did a test and it doesn’t run the cameras in real time, only updating when stopped. Liking your train of thought though, there has to be a way!….

    Hi Tom,
Sorry didn’t see your last post before I replied. Oh well with my work around and your work around together it still gets the job done, but if there’s any apple software writers with nothing to do today maybe they could have a fiddle!
FCP has other advantages over Avid’s Multicam so I’m happy to work on either except for the really quick turnaround jobs. But if this were fixed there’d be no reason not to use FCP all the time for any multicamera job.
Thanks for your help and time Tom,

    Reg.

    Greetings,

I am running across this same issue with the multicam editing along with some strange erratic behavior like the camera scroll arrows disappearing.

I’m running FCP 6.0 and after talking to support over at DP Group here in LA, they recommended the update to 6.0.1 because it addresses some issue but wasn’t told of that particular issue. The support guy also said thtat there were so many bugs in FCP 6 that they were still compiling a laundry list for Apple.

They went on further to state that 6.0.2 is made exclusively for OS 10.5 and above, though 10.4.11 is some sort of “weird hybrid”(their term) and recommended just sticking with 6.0.1. Which, of course, is no longer available.

I’m wondering if anyone has any experience concerning this matter and it being resolved by updates or if it was in the original multicam of FCP 5. Any help you can give would be solid. Thx.
