Multiclip – DVCpro & AVCHD
We just recently upgraded to a Panasonic HPX170 and love the camera. We want to get another one but money is tight and we are now looking at the new HMC40. The HPX170 files are transferred in as DVCPRO HD and reading up on the HMC40, it looks like the files will be transferred in as AVCHD. Has anyone had any luck creating multiclips in FCP with the two different file formats? Or are we going to have to convert the AVCHD to DVCpro every time we do a multicam edit? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Gotta read more. The camera records AVCHD, but FCP doesn’t edit that format natively. It needs to be imported and converted to ProRes or ProRes LT.

You cannot multiclip two different formats. Multiclips only work if both formats match EXACTLY. Frame size, frame rate…everything. SO you will have to convert the DVCPRO HD to ProRes too…via Media Manager.

If only that was an option with FCP. There are third party converters that can do this, like Voltaic and Toast 10. Or Compressor, after you import as ProREs.
