  • Multicam issues adding .wav and accessing original source time code

Hello and thanks in advance to any help you can offer:

We’ve been in the process of migrating to CC Premiere Pro (CS6) from FCP7. Multicam work flow is critical to a high proportion of our editorial projects.

Our main edit system is a late 2012 mac pro 12 core with 64gb ram, our secondary system is a new (2013) 27″ iMac with 32gb ram.

We’re currently working on a project that has over 4 hours of content recorded in 7 seperate segments – shot with 3 cameras (2 Sony ex3’s xdcam and one sony FS-700 avchd) plus a seperate 3 track .wav file from a sound devices mixer / recorder.

Problem 1) When we try to create a multicam clip that includes all 3 cameras plus the .wav file, the option to create a multicam source sequence is greyed out and not available. If we deselect the .wav file, we can create a multicam source sequence (clip). Is this the way its supposed to work? I’ve seen demo’s of what was probably an earlier version of the software that clearly allowed for this.

It took some time to figure out but we’ve been using the following work around: Right click Multicam Source Sequence and open in timeline, add .wav file and close sequence. This works, its just extra work – are we missing something?

Problem 2) No matter what we do, we cannot get the timecode window to reference the original camera source time code, it only displays the multicam source sequence time code which begins at 00:00:00:00 for every clip. We’ve tried switching the timecode window to the various sources via the pull down but it still does not read the source time code. We almost always transcribe our shoots and receive client notes referencing the source time code and if we cannot reference the source time code easily, it will add hours and hours of work onto our selectoin process (we often have a lot of source material to sort through).

So far the only work around we have come up with is to do the same thing as we’re doing to add the .wav file: right click the multicam source sequence and add the time code burn in effect to one of the orignal source clips in the multicam. This is a pain though and needs to be undone before showing cuts to the clients each time.

Any advice / solutions would be super appreciated! The other issues I’ve been reading about multicam losing track of edits is certainly scaring me…. but we haven’t seen signs of it yet and we’ve cut several (simpler) multicam projects so far.

    Thanks!
