  • Multicam edit problems, cant figure it out.

    Hey

I am editing HD on a macbook so its under a bit of pressure. I have gotten the advice to use downsampled files to do the multicam editing, and then reconnect to original files and by that edit the original files. The idea is that the downsampled files have a light enough footprint so that the multicam edit itself can run realtime.

So i have downsampled my original files to 25% size, apple intermediate codec using compressor. Those files i have imported, and used via “multiclip” function. So far so good. I have pulled the multicam sequence to the timeline, I have the 2-up window and the sequence window.

I have checked the “play multiclip” option in the RT menu. BUT when i play the sequence i can NOT cut the sequence by clicking the thumbnail in the 2-up window, and they are not live, as in playing the 2 videotracs when the playhead moves along the multicam sequence. I have studied the tutorial from Lynda.com i have payed for, followed it completely but it doesnt help. I cannot figure out what is going wrong so if you have an idea I would LOVE to hear from you.

    Best wishes

What version of FCP are you using and what are the specs on your Macbook?

Generally speaking however, when I have issues with multicam edits, I quit FCP, trash the preferences, reopen, and all is right with the world.

I’ve got Digital Rebellion’s Preferences Manager installed, so I don’t even know any more. https://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm

    Hey

I did find the preference file, but trashing it didnt help. What happens is that after creating the multiclip sequence, when i have my 4-up window in the viewer, istead of stayin in “4-up” mode when i start playing the sequence it jumps to the active videotrack, basically the same as in the canvas window making it impossible to edit.

It needs to stay in 4-up configuration so I can clik the windows to insert edit point but this doesnt happen. I am soon pulling hair out :0).

    Best wishes

Had a similar issue and I think this will help you. It is probably due to FC doing an auto render while you were out getting coffee. If so you will need to get rid of the render file. I usually just toggle the Visible button on the left of the timeline, and this will get you a pop up asking you to accept the fact that you will lose the rendered files. Once you do this, you will have the multi clip access. Hope this helps.

I think I’ve seen something similar on my Mac Pro working with 7 and 8 DV clips. This is probably too easy to be the problem solver but I’ll say it anyway, have enabled “Multiclip playback” on the sequence timeline drop down it’s on the left hand side of the timeline, where you select Dynamic or Safe RT.

I found my MacBookPro despite being expanded to it’s limit really struggled with HDV, to the point where I figured as a back up to my Mac Pro it just wouldn’t cut it. It’s little more than a way to check “rushes” in the field HDV or DV, just doesn’t have the horses.
