multicam and color correction
Posted by Gilles Gagnon on May 13, 2010 at 1:15 amI understand I can color correct an entire clip by adding the fx to the clip in the proj media. but…
Is there a way to do it while I see both cameras (from the multicam shoot) simultaneously WHILE I color correct so I can match the colors as closely as possible?
(it’s weird, I white balanced my cams before the shoot so I wouldn’t have to contend with this but the colors are still off)
Thanks!

May 13, 2010 at 1:21 amI use secondary color corrector, and use the alpha channel slider. This turns off the top track and allows you to color correct that track to the one below it…Are you using identical cameras? I have FX1’s and FX7’s and since one is CCD and the other CMOS I do get a little color issue even with identical white balancing. I utilize the hue under Secondary Color Corrector with reasonable success….good luck!!

Yes, I used a couple of dvx 100s. One’s a dvx100A, the other a DVX100B.
SO if I understand you, one track becomes partially see-through as you color correct? I’ll give it a try.
Is there a way to see them side by side when color correcting tracks?

May 13, 2010 at 12:33 pmyou can also save a snapshot of one camera and put it in the preview window so you can match the files up.

Any way of having them side by side while I color correct as in “split screen”?

May 13, 2010 at 2:07 pmI found a workaround.
I set my configuration such that the trimmer had one take and the preview had the take I wanted to adjust. Seeing both, I was able to match up the colors while viewing both clips to match simultaneously.
I hope this helps others.

May 13, 2010 at 7:47 pmGiles, I have been using the split window technique and just tried your “work around”. I think it works better than the split window for color matching. For those who try this, you need to enable the trimmer preview window. It is also useful to know that the home and end keys will take you to the beginning and end of a selection in the trimmer.
Thanks for sharing this.

May 13, 2010 at 7:56 pmyou’re welcome Jerry. It feels good to give back to the community which has been absolutely incredibly helpful to me and my questions and learning process.
I’m curious, what steps do you take to do the split screen version for color correcting?

May 14, 2010 at 2:02 amGiles, here is how I do the split screen.
1. Load your reference clip on the timeline and in the preview window toolbar copy a snapshot to clipboard.
2. Load the clip to be matched to the timeline and in the preview window toolbar click the Split Screen Preview dropdown and select clipboard. This will place the snapshot of your reference clip in the left half of the preview window and your timeline clip in the right half.
3. Now you can use FX’s on you timeline clip to match it up with the reference clip. However, I find that certain of the eyedroppers cause the split window to revert to single (non-split) view.
Please post here if you find this works for you – might be one of my preference settings or techniques that is fouling the split screen.
