Multicam , a quick intro appreciated
Hi
I have the potential to do a shoot later this year with a fixed cam login a overview of an event and also a roving camera around the site.
I guess that this is the sort of scenario that multicam editing is used for?
I have found the tutorials on here, but unfortunately they are these damn video tutorials , which with my internet connection speed are virtually un watchable…well they are unwatchable . I left the video loading and came back 15 mins later and the thing was still spinning the white radial lines.
I always find video tutorials such a drag any way, they so often take 2 minutes telling you what can be explained in two lines of text and a single screen grab.
A brief google search has not come up with anything of much use.
Just wondered if any one knew of any text only tutorials or , even if you had time , give me brief grounding in Multicam use.
I had not come here today with the intention of asking for help, but I can’t watch the video so any pointers appreciated.

As you can tell most tutorials are in video format because it’s much easier to explain something that’s graphical in a video then to try and explain it as text with static shots. If you want text, you should probably start with Apple’s own documentation:

If this is a paying gig, you might want to invest in some professional training. Ripple Training has a series on Multicam Editing in Final Cut Pro X and the best part is that you can order it on a USB Stick so you don’t have to worry about bandwidth. I have several of their titles and it’s quality training well worth the investment.

I’ll try that.Whenever I do a sesrch for anything, it is always the bideos thag I ignore. They tend to be so full of soperflous waffle . You will have watched 2 mins and still not been told anything. A few still images and text often enough, for very many subjects. Everyone lesrns differrntly I suppose and others have a much greater bullS**t thrrshold. I am not making comments on the videos here, as I have not seen them, just talking genetically. 🙂
This msybe a paid job , but certainly not big money .

I suggest you invest the Ripple tutorials which you can download so no worries about streaming – they just go into your iTunes Library.

I agree with you 100%. I create training for a living and that business has dried up considerably lately because people feel they can get all the training they need from YouTube for free but it’s really a case of getting that you pay for. Most YouTube videos are someone rambling on about everything but the topic and giving misleading information on top of that. That’s why I suggest professional training like Ripple has. There’s no fluff… just great insights and examples on how to get the job done. It’s an investment in your future.

There’s also Larry Jordan’s DVD’s, which I found very accessible. And Linda.com. So you have options.

I believe the problem is that Neil has very limited bandwidth which is why I suggested solutions that don’t need it be downloaded.

Yes, very poor net connection.
Copper phone line, no fibre.
supposed to be 20 Mb connection but barely get 8 and even that drops out.Tried for 6 hours the other day to download a 1Gb iPhoto update. Had to restart countless times .
Suppsed to be getting fixed but I am getting sick of complaining.
I do loathe video tutorials too, most of them are so full of waffle and you waste 5 minutes watching before thry actually tell you anything useful. Even more annoying waiting for the buffering/ downloading etc.

In which case Ripple are your friends as they will post you a USB stick with the tutorials on them.
Incidentally how do you manage downloading the OS updates and even downloading FCPX and its updates? Must be a nightmare.
I struggled a lot with FCPX at the beginning and the Ripple tutorials were the thing that got me on the right track (pardon the pun).

Of course you may be one of those people who learns better from text in which case the Multicam section in FCPX help is pretty comprehensive.
Hope that doesn’t sound unhelpful but nothing is written there that we could probably improve on. Specific problems and somebody here will always be able to help.
Just go to the Help drop down menu and search “Multicam”
