  • Multi-Processing Settings that Work?

    Hey guys!
So a while back I made a post about using multiprocessing in After Effects CS5.5. Back then I only had 8 gigs of RAM and everyone told me in order for Multi Frame processing to really work, I needed more. Soo! I upgraded to 16gigs… and I’m still having a problem with it.

I was wondering if anyone would be up to explaining for me, and other users, how to tweak these settings to work the best on your system.

The problem I am having is that it seems to stay on “background process status, Loading projects….” for quite sometime, then it starts rendering frame, but it really dose not seem much faster then without, especially after the wait time of “Loading Projects”.

    Here is what I running:
    Asus g74sx Laptop
    Windows 7 64bit
    Quadcore Intel i7
    16gigs RAM (all Samsung 204pin)
Nvidia Geforce GTX 560m +2gig ram

Here is my current MP settings in AE:
    Installed CPU (processor cores): 8
CPU reserved for other applications: 1
RAM allocation per background CPU: 2

I do have open GL turned on. Dont know how much that effects this.
I donno know, what do you guys think? lets talk about it. =)
    Stay Creative boys!

Have you seen the Adobe FAQ: What are the optimum memory settings for best performance in After Effects CS4, CS5, and CS5.5? at https://forums.adobe.com/thread/543440?

That advises starting with 6 GB of RAM free for other apps, and using 3 GB of RAM per process. This will reduce your total number of used CPUs, but may actually speed up your render if your current problem is caused by overscheduling limited resources.

You should turn off OpenGL for rendering. Its results are sub-par.

A minimum of 2gb per core and 1.5 for background processes. No OpenGL. Do a test though, it may be that allocating 3gb per core and using less cores works better for your project.

Thanks for the info guys. I have tried a few different setting and it still seems like it is not really any faster then leaving the multi-frame off. Maybe I am expecting too much out of it.

The main thing that drives me crazy is how long that background process takes. It’s really annoying. Have not figured what I can tweak that effects that. Hmmmmmm….

Does it happen on all projects, or only on specific ones?

Does it make a difference if you mute the audio for the preview?

Have you tried restoring the preferences by holding Ctrl-Alt-Shift (Win) / Cmd-Alt-Shift (Mac) while starting AE?
