Multi-Layered Green Screen Edit
I am doing an edit with a lot of layers and our host is moving on and off screen and I’ll be layering him on screen, so when one version is talking, the other will be blurred, like this:

I am currently using Final Cut Pro X to sync the audio / video, and to map the video out. I think once I have the mapping done, I want to bring it to Motion 5 or After Effects for final compositing, 3D camera moves and effects. Now my question is, with this being about a 3 minute video with multiple layers, does this make sense? What would the best plan-of-action for how I map the video thru to mastering? I just need any advice on how I should work within FCPX and also exporting my layers and footage to Motion 5 or After Effects, which I can work in both, but prefer After Effects.

AFX would be best in terms of final result, followed by Motion and then FCPX for that sort of look. The reverse order would be true for ease of getting the job done. Going to be a fair amount of work whichever app you decide to do it in. So make sure the greenscreen is being shot properly.

We filmed it already, green screen is great. We shot on the Sony FS5 in 4K, so the keying has been super easy. I have to link up the external audio, so I had been doing that in FCPX and mapping the layers, but if I can link them later, let me know? I am fluid either way, I just never had linked audio via AFX. I also have elements coming in from our VFX guy who will be creating all the additional animated elements needed.

If I start in After Effects, how should I go about mastering, especially with linking the external audio?

I would suggest completing the edit before moving over to After Effects as linked audio will require outputting completed clips in X. If you feel confident in doing the vfx all withing FCPX it will be much simpler.
There’s also Xsend Motion which gets clips and projects into Motion very easily.

Thanks Noah, I’m looking into both XSEND MOTION and XIMPORT AE from Automatic Duck to find the best solution for this. I have most everything laid out and ready to go, once I’m closer to mastering, I’m assuming I want to have all my audio, visual, effects etc ready for After Effects or Motion 5 and essentially mastering because I won’t be able to round trip back to FCPX for mastering?
I wish their was a better solution for round tripping between FCPX and Motion, why isn’t there like their was in the past?
