    Hello all:

Just to clarify — what is the advantage to having a multi-format monitor (say, the PVM 20L5 vs. the PVM 204MU)? If you’re displaying DVCPRO HD via the component output of a K2 for example, is the idea that you’re seeing an HD signal (albeit displayed on a less-than-HD monitor) versus having to get the Kona to do an SD down-convert? If that is the case, seems to me that you would actually be able to view the signal at a higher resolution on the 20L5, right? Instead of an SD 525 line down-convert format, you’re watching a 720 line signal displayed on about 600 lines (16×9 letterboxed).

Does this make any sense? If anyone can enlighten me, I’d appreciate it.

    Best, JIM.

If you’re color correcting for HD you want to see a true HD signal. A downconverted SD signal will not be a good thing for color correcting as you have a LOT more latitude with everything in HD. I’m finding this out as I start color correcting a show and my PVM20L5/1 is working beautifully for color correction.

If you have a Sony PVM-20M4U, you simply will not be able to see the HD image. Is seeing the HD image important to you? You tell me. The PVM-20L5/1 will properly scan the 720p or 1080i image to the HD resolution, but with the 20M4U, you will have to use the Kona Control panel to downconvert the Y Pb Pr analog output to standard def. If there is no difference to you between standard def and hi def images, then your existing monitor will be just fine.

do you have the HD-SDI card for your monitor, I have that same monitor and am looking into buying the card. Also out of curiosity, do you find the Sony monitor rather dark….mine always seems darker than it should be.
