    Multi-camera shoot – different formats

    Hi,

    Got a shoot coming up tomorrow and have been experimenting with different formats.

    Camera’s are:
    EX1 with Letus Extreme
    Z5
    550D

    The Z5 will be shooting 1080i as the progressive mode cannot be trusted.

    So going to shoot:

  • 720p on EX1 (for some reason 1080p just doesn’t look as good and jerky in timeline even though seq matches footage!)
  • 1080p on the 550D
  • 1080i on the Z5

    • Is there a quicker way than keep rendering the Z5 footage in the timeline? Maybe convert the whole lot to prores before maybe?

      Asking for trouble, shoot all progressive.

      Hi,

      In what way? All the tests have come out ok.

      I really don’t want to have to shoot interlaced with my EX1, but will do if needed.

      Why do you think there will be a problem?

      The Z5 won’t produce a decent image progressive, so would all have to be shot interlaced.

      The 550d only shoots p.
      Mixing p & I can yield less then ideal results.
      But if u have run test-go 4 it!

      Thanks. When I tried to mix 1080i on both camera’s, the result was worse than 720p and 1080i on the Z5.

      Test was ok, but admittedly on a locked off Z5 shot, so couldn’t see motion. Will test again with a moving clip to be sure.

      What things should we look out for as how can we overcome them?

      PS – Just found a couple of forums threads saying to convert one to the other in compressor.

      So could convert the Z5i into progressive, then pop in the timeline with the 720p from the EX1?

      Its weird that I seem to get really bad alaising (especially when the image moved) when I used 1080i from the EX1 with the 1080i from the Z5, but progressive looked ok!?

      Upper (Odd) when I load the Z5 1080i first and actually the same when I load the EX1 1080i first.

    • Load EX1 1080i first, when the shot moves all is fine
    • Load Z5 1080i first, when the shot moves all is hideous

      • Can’t see if the aliasing is happening on the Z5 footage as its a locked off shot.

      Plus either way I do it, I still have to render the footage for the other camera!

    Just so you know, you won’t be able to use FCP’s Multicam edit feature. That is unless ALL frame rates and frame sizes match. That is why it is so much easier using the same cameras on a multi cam shoot.

    Only you can make that decision.

    Thanks. Just did another 1080i test. Set field dominance to none. Worked fine now!

    Still have to render one of the camera’s footage tho, even tho they are both 1080i 25 fps
