Multi-Cam with multiple sync points
Hello everyone.Although I’ve found a few answers to my problems before,this is my first post.
I’ll try to explain my situation as best as I can.I shot a theatrical play with a friend and colleague of mine a few days ago.It was a 3 camera shoot with one camera fixed on a wide shot of the entire stage,the other doing medium shots focusing on the part of the stage the action was taking place,and the third for close-ups of the actors.
The play was in 2 parts, with the first one being about 80 minutes long and the second one just a bit over the 60 minute mark.We were shooting miniDV and were unable to locate 80 minute tapes,so we had to break up the first act in 2 tapes,and change tapes during the set changes between acts.But to avoid missing out on anything,we had decided beforehand to have one of the cameras change at a different time than the other two.
So 2 of the cameras changed at about 35 minutes into the play while the other changed at about 45 minutes in.
So in order to have the full first part of the play I have to sync 2 tapes from each camera,with varying sync points.
And I haven’t found a way to place more than one sync point when grouping clips.But this isn’t the only problem.
After the shooting was done,my colleague told me that since he was afraid that he was going to run out of tape before the end of the second part,he would stop recording during the set changes.
So now the entire second part from his camera(which was doing the close-ups by the way) is split in various clips,that need to be synced with the other cameras.So what I need to know,is there a way to place more than one sync points in multi-cam editing and have AVID fill the gaps with black?
Or can I sync them manually in the timeline,and then turn that timeline into a multi-cam?I should point out that I’ve already done 2 multi-cams before but never had to find more than one sync point because all the cameras were running the entire time.So i’m a bit familiar with the multi-cam editing interface.

Can you use the timecode calculator to create a common timecode for each of your sync points and enter it into AuxTC1 then use that for the grouping?

Hello Michael.
I don’t have Avid in front of me at the moment,but if I understand correctly what you’re saying,is to create a new timecode for every clip and use it to sync.
Won’t that result in getting more than one multi-cam clips though?
My problem is being able to sync those 5 or 6 clips together,and have Avid place black in between those.
Ideally I would like to place every camera as a separate video track on the timeline,sync them manually by moving them around,and then use that timeline to create my multi-cam clip.
Kinda like what you would do if you wanted to do multi-cam in Premiere.But I don’t know if I can create a clip from a timeline in Avid.
I’ll try using the timecode calculator as you suggested and see if that works.Thank you for your time.

If you align all the clips on V tracks in the timeline in sync as you mentioned, then you are almost there. Go to the head of each clip and enter the record side timecode for that frame in the AucTC1 for each of those clips. Once done for all clips, select all, and group/multigroup and you’re good to go.
