I’m about to editing my second song from a concert and I’m having some issues. My first song had 8 angles and I was able to do it fine. Actually, there was a light-green render bar across the whole clip in the timeline and when I rendered it and played the multi-clip it only showed me one angle in the viewer. So I un-did the render and it seemed to work fine with the light-green render bar over it Now I’m on another song and I have 11 angles to play with this time. I set up my multi-clip and placed it in the timeline and Open synced it up and it will barely play for a few seconds and freezes. I changed the 16-up back to 9-up to see if it would make a difference and it didn’t.

I have my RT set to Unlimited and Video is set to Dynamic and Playback Frame Rae is also set to Dynamic. Scrubbing High Quality is checked and Multiple Playback and Full Quality are also checked.

All of my clips are set at DV/DVCPro 720×480 29.97. I have all other programs closed and my Mac is a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 6 GB DDR SDRAM on it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated…

What type of raid are you using?

I’m not using a raid. I’m using a Fantom external firewire hard drive and using the firewire 800 port and cable.

Exactly! A single drive does not have enough throughput for the number of channels of pix and audio you’re trying to edit with the multi-cam feature.

So are you saying that there’s nothing I can really do with it being on one external hard drive? That would suck…

Chris, Yes you need more bandwidth to support that amount of angles. Here is a workaround:

You may want to make a set of transcoded files for multiclip editing. You can point back to your hirez files at any time.

Simply batch export all the angles and pick a low data rate codec with the same frame size and frame rate as your masters. ProRes (proxy) works great. Once you have a new transcoded set of files, reconnect your original clips or sequence to the proxy files and edit away. You should be able to get 11 angles to play down on a firewire drive at proxy SD mode. Then whenever you want to playback or output or finish, reconnect to the original hirez files.

    Good luck!

Again thanks for the advice. I copied 7 of the 11 clips on to my internal drive and made them offline in FCP and then reconnected them on the internal drive and it’s working fine now.
