I’ve been using Toast 11 Titanium (Roxio) to convert my .MTS files into .MOV Apple ProRes 422 HQ. It’s working fine, no issues, however it’s pretty slow. Activity Monitor reports that it’s using all 4 of my cores during the conversion process (210 % CPU) and all 4 CPU usage history graphics are always 4 bars or higher (6 bars max).

It’ll take about 1 hour to convert 8GB material (1080p) resulting .MOV is about 25GB.

So it appears to be using all my cores (3Ghz MacPro 1,1 2X2 CPU – 4 cores total), so I’m not sure if there is any way to speed up this process other than buying a 12 core MacPro. But any hints are welcome to help improve conversion time.

Has anyone tried Moyea Software (Trial) which also claims multi-core support or any other product to do faster high quality MTS to MOV Apple ProRes 422 HQ conversions?

    Thanks, Rob.

If you’re happened to have Adobe AF, Premiere, or Flash you can utilize Media Encoder. It’s well known for loading all cpu cores up to 100%. I don’t think Toast is a good route to convert files.

Thanks for the suggestion, Adobe’s products appear to perform at about the same speed as Toast 11 (both utilize all available cores). Guess I just need a MacPro with more cores — 4 cores just isn’t enough these days.
