WIN 7 64 bit, Vegas 10e latest build. I have MTS files shot on AF100 that played fine previously. Today I try to put them on the timeline but Vegas doesn’t recognize the file type at all. I reinstalled Vegas, reinstalled Raylight Ultra (so that I can still play my P2 files), restarted the computer, still not able to play MTS files. Earlier today there were a bunch of updates automatically installed for CS6, could this have affected playback in Vegas? The MTS files won’t play in Windows Media Player either, which I’m pretty sure they did previously.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I was just going to ask what changes have you made to your computer lately? I would back those changes off and see if it makes a difference. Try Windows System Restore or yesterday’s incremental backup? (you do back up your computer daily don’t you? because you just found out why this is important)

I had this happen earlier in the year. For me it turned out to be when I uninstalled Adobe Photoshop Elements. Apparently Adobe was sloppy in the uninstall and did not remove the codecs they registered. So Windows thought they were there according to the registry, but the files were uninstalled. GraphStudio and Codex Tweak Tool helped out to detect where the problem was. Like you, Vegas and Media Player were impacted by the list of codecs that Windows presents as registered. That is why you see a lot of comments in this forum about not installing just any codecs, especial free ones, as they may be preferred by Windows over the better ones you already had working.

    Good luck,

Indeed Steve and if you use your computer to make a living, you should have any and all automatic updates turned OFF. Then once a month, after you perform a full backup of your computer, you should allow all of the updates to run. This way if they break anything, you have a good full backup to return to. I also create a daily incremental backup so I can go back to any day for the last month and recover my workstation. Right now I have a ton of Microsoft updates just sitting there waiting for me to apply them and they won’t get applied until Oct 1st after my monthly full backup.

Definitely right on that one John, thats how updates needs to be
handled if one uses their system as their source of income.

So, the culprit has been found and it’s an ongoing nightmare for me. I work for a healthcare company and HIPAA regulations are a huge thing. Earlier this year our IT department instituted a requirement that all drives be encrypted and passworded to prevent any patient or confidential information from being released or stolen in the event of a drive being lost. Doesn’t matter that I have no such information on any of the projects I’m working on. This encryption hosed up and it’s taken until this morning for IT to straighten out my drive so that I can continue making my backups, much less edit the project. I’ve been battling to get exempted from this encryption scheme for weeks and will continue, but it seems right now that it’s a losing battle. At least it’s all working again…for now.
    Thanks everyone for the advice.

Thanks for getting back to us. If you want to really mess up your computer, hire an IT team to manage it. I guess they figure once it doesn’t work, nothing else can go wrong… now THAT is security! lol 😀
