  • mpeg2 program stream 720×576 anamorphic results in 720×404 ???

Posted by Mark Palmos on March 24, 2009 at 4:45 pm

    Hi guys
Im in a bit of a pickle, have a deadline to produce a vid for a competition entry, and they want 720×576 mpeg2 program stream. My vid is 16×9

I have imported my 720p clip into a 720×576 anamorphic timeline and render it in compressor.
Compressor says 720×576, but when it renders it comes out 404 pixels high??

Any (quick) tips on how to get an anamorphic mpeg2 at the correct pixel size?

    Thanks guys,
    Mark.

[Mark Palmos] “Compressor says 720×576, but when it renders it comes out 404 pixels high?? “

Where, in Quicktime? If so, it’s quite possible that Quicktime is reading the anamorphic flag and dislaying your movie 720×404, but in reality your file really is 720×576 anamorphic. It happens with 16×9 DVDs as well.

    Hi Jeremy,
    thanks for the quick answer.
Yes, I see the 720×404 in both QT player and VLC player, as well as when I command-I to see the info about the file.
I have tried the 720p file in compressor directly and also tried putting that file into FCP into an anamorphic SD timeline… same result.

    sigh.
    tick tick…

Are you sure you have the output set to 720×576?

Bring the file back into FCP and check the pixel dimensions in the bin.

If it’s set, then you are good. It’s Quicktime that is at fault. I assume you are sending this for a TV transport of some sort? if so, there’s no real way to check it unless you have a hardware player. Your settings look correct.

    Ok thanks guys,
I will send the file to myself and check on my trusty PC when I get home.
It is for playback off some Hardware player, so I reck it will be fine, even if it is 404 pixels high.
I will report back as to what the PC says the dimensions really are… and I will try it in FCP, or even mpeg streamclip to see the size too.
    Till later
    Rendering away… again…
    Mark.

I get the same thing all the time. It’s QTs problem.I’m compressing a 1280×720 16:9 video right now to MPEG-2, and when I open it in QT it says it’s 720×404, which it is not. Don’t worry.

    Hi Mark,
    Don’t worry. Your MPEg~2 is perfectly 16×9.
Open the clip in MPGStreamclip and you will see that the size is 720×576.
I’ve sow that long ago but I think that’s just the QT Visual Setting.
    Cheers,
    Rafael
