MPEG2 for aspect ratios other than 4:3 and 16:9?
Hi ya,
I’m working on a peice of video for an LED wall with a shape of 1536×576 (ratio of 8:3).
I’ve been asked to provide it in MPEG2 format.
But all the compressors i’m using (QT, Apple compressor) require that I render the movie out at either 4:3 or 16:9.
How can I make an MPEG2 movie with other aspect ratios?
I’m using apple G5 with Tiger 10.4.7.
I have AfterEffects and finalcut studio and QT pro.

Since it is 8:3 it sounds like two movies side by side (both 4:3) would fit. You’d have two decks synched together and two projectors aimed at the wide screen. After Effects would be the route I would go to create the big clip before dividing into the two halves. But it sure sounds like two MPEGs playing side by side would work.
You need to check with the staging company, the producer on the job and get more specs on the project.

No, I’ll go ahead and ask them.
I often get asked to provide unconventionally sized/shaped movies in MPEG2 format, but as far as I’m aware MPEG2 is only used for 4:3 or 16:9 (like DV PAL).
I thought I’d ask you incase I was wrong.Bruce

You need to use a different MPEG-2 Encoder. Just create your source movie at the resolution you need, then use either Compression Master (Epsiode) or the MainConcept MPEG-2 Encoder. Both apps will let you encode to non-DVD sizes. I think Digigami MEGAPeg Pro will allow HD encodes as well.
