    can we ask what you’re using mpeg1 for?

    Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

    MPEG-1 is usually used at 320×240.

    Yes that the only standard for MPEG-1.
    If you want a 16×9 clip in MPEG-1, it must be letter-boxed.
    The Toast MPEG-1 encoder used to have few option to frame the picture.

    mpeg 1 works in ffmpeg with whatever size you give it.

    % ffmpeg -i fluid.mov -sameq intermediate.mpg

    A 1024×576 frame size came out at 8 Mbps and looks stunning.

    It is especially useful as a high quality intermediate to stitch tops/tails etc. before final encoding.
