MPEG Streamclip
A thread from last year recommended this technique for obtaining the cleanest .wmv files from FCP:
1. In FCP, output a full-sized Quicktime file
2. In MPEG Streamclip, transcode QT file to .avi
3. Copy .avi file to a PC
4. Use Microsoft’s Windows Media Encoder to create .wmv file.My questions:
1. Is this still the way to get the best quality .wmv files from RCP?
2. Could someone look up and publish his settings for MPEG Streamclip? What format or flavor of QT works best? What specific codec and settings in MPEG Streamclip work best?When I try this, MPEG Streamclip outputs an .avi file that sipmly has vertical bars of color.

These days most people would use Flip4Mac or Episode.

In the earlier thread, someone pointed out that using WME guaranteed access to Microsoft’s latest efforts.
I just tried both ways: Flip4Mac straight out of FCP, and the QT->AVI->.wmv route with WME, at about 400 Kbps. For a similar final file size, the results were extremely close, though WME seemed to be a little more pleasing on faces — less harsh.
Since I couldn’t get MPEG Streamclip to produce a usable .avi file, I had to export a DV movie from FCP, take that into After Effects, and export an .avi for WME to encode to .wmv.
I’m still curious as to why I can’t make MPEG Streamclip create an .avi.

You need to detail what format you’re working with, and the exact steps you are taking through your current edit, export and conversion process, otherwise folks will be just guessing at where things might be going wrong.

You’re probably just seeing the differences in Gamma between the two platforms.
