I know this gets asked a lot but i am constantly getting bugged by people for file types they can’t open!

When a client requests “an mpg”…what the heck do they really want?

Most just look dumb when you ask which type (mpg, mpeg, mp4, etc etc.) – and to tell the truth I don’t know which is which either.

What format is the most universally accepted one to use? The material i send is usually no more than a 20 sec 16:9 commercial, which i try to reduce to no more than 5mb to aid emailing.

please help before i loose all my hair!!

If I had to guess it would be mpeg1. I use cleaner to make my mpeg1’s for clients who are just used to older codecs and who wont update any players.

[lightning ad] “When a client requests “an mpg”…what the heck do they really want?”
    Hi
What they mean is they want a movie that will play in Powerpoint. What they mean is one that can be played natively by whatever older version of Windows Media Player they got with their version of Windows when the computer/laptop was new.

What they means is they don’t have a DVD player installed, so can’t view DVDs.
What they mean is that their IT department has disabled installing add-on software like QuickTime – or that even if there is no ban they don’t have the expertise…

    So:
Mpg 1 will work, but not look good.
WMV will look better, but needs extra Mac software to create them.

yes – i currently supply them as .wmv’s (created using the popwire plug-in) and it does a fine job. Its just some people take one look at the extension and get arsey when it doesn’t read.mpg !!

I shall continue the way I have been….thanks for confirming that i’m not missing some great obvious alternative.

    muchas grassy ass.
