So this might be a problem when sharing projects with 2 people one on a PC and the other on a Mac, both running CS6. When I get the project from the other person I cannot open it and get an error that the sequence contains a codec that it cannot find on my Mac. I did find a workaround to get the project open and that was to import the project into an already open one. When looking at the sequence settings the only thing different with my sequence and the one I could not open was the MPEG I-Frame Only setting the the preview.

So first of all is that a PC thing ( as I use Quicktime desktop and Pro Res 422) or can I find that codec somewhere and install it and use it. Where about on a Mac does Premiere store its codecs?

    Thanks.

What codec is the video in? You solve that question and that may well fix your problem.

Is the original media in mxf, avi or mov format? Then within that container what codec is used – DNxHD, ProRes, Uncompressed, h.264, etc.

I think he may be referring to the Preview/Prerender codec, not necessarily the footage codec.

The original video, which originated with me was pro res 422. I created the first project passed it on to the director who made selects. Then it was passed back to me and I could not open the project. I am on the MAc.

Yes its the Preview Codec that is causing the problem. I don’t know if that codec MPEG I-Frame Only is a PC thing or not. It is not available to me in the drop down menu on the mac.

But it’s the Preview File format….that won’t make a difference when initially connecting media in the timeline. It only matters if you preview or render your footage.

Is the footage in the ProRes format still? Did the PC guys possibly change it while doing FX or color work (PC’s can’t write ProRes so they would’ve picked a different format). Does the footage import properly on it’s own into another project? If not….what’s the error?

I’ve just never heard of or experienced a preview setting be the deterrent for a project failing to connect properly…..though with technology I guess it’s always a possibility!

No the footage is still ProRes and was not transcoded, the only difference in the sequence settings that i could see, was the Preview codec selected.

To answer your original question though, I-Frame Only MPEG is an option on Mac’s as well. I have it as a preview rendering codec option on my Mac Pro.

But like I said, that shouldn’t be impacting your file opening abilities. You could have the PC Premiere send you a XML or EDL file to get all the footage reassembled as a workaround.

I checked my laptop, Mac does have it. Seems like a superficial bug.

If you found a work around by creating an empty project and importing your working project into it without issue then I say chalk it up to a bug and keep working.
