I got a request from a client for a 640 x 480 MPEG-4 file from an existing video. I have never exported MPEG-4. I exported it out of FCP using the quicktime conversion and the file will not play back on the PC. What am I missing. Any recommendations.

    Thanks

You’ll need to explain “won’t playback on the PC” in much more explicit terms. Could be a simple need for the PC to update Quicktime. Might not even be installed. But why did he want MPEG4 if it’s going to be played on a PC? In what application?

Put MPEG4 into the help systems for FCP and for Compressor and see what the machine spits back at you.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

The problem with this is I do not have access to the requesting person for an explaination. When I try to open the file, Window Media Player tells me it cannot recognize the extention. I guess my question should be does the .mp4 format play back on a PC without Quicktime. I was able to open the file and play through quicktime on the PC. The main proplme is the requester is half a world away and we do not have access to him before the file goes out.

An Mpeg4 Quicktime needs to be played in Quick Time player – Not WMP.

Ask him to download the latest version of Quicktime Player off Apple’s website. It’s free and easy to use.
