  • Mpeg-2’s outputting 640×480 files??

Posted by Lukeinvt on August 6, 2005 at 12:12 am

    I am using Compressor 1.2.1 on a G4 Powerbook.
I have been editing skateboarding footage shot on DV with Final Cut Pro
Using the Mpeg-2 60 min HQ encode width 720, height 480, aspect ration 4:3, field dominance bottom first I still get a file that says 640×480.

And actually this has not presented itself as a problem because DVD Studio Pro recognizes the files as 720×480.

My concern is this, I have brought the compressed Mpeg-2’s into FCP sot that I may preview them on my broadcast monitor . They import as 640×480, which makes me think that DVDSP is stretching the files to 720×480, there by compromising quality.

Whatever the case may be, I have the preset set up to output a 720×480 file, but finder says it’s 640×480 and FCP agrees.

    Any help?

NTSC DV footage should have a 3:2 aspect ratio, correct?
The only options compressor gives me are 16:9 and 4:3.

    Why is that?

    Actually, all is well.

While NTSC DV has a 3:2 pixel ratio (720×480), the image aspect ratio is always either 4:3 or 16:9, which is why you have those settings. Its being encoded internally as 720×480. The 640×480 QuickTime reports is the post-aspect-ratio-correction size – QuickTime Player squishes the video to 640×480 to provide the 4:3 aspect ratio.

So, don’t fret it. It’s all working according to plan.
