MPEG-2 Playback Component Disappeared
Posted by Robxtwo on October 10, 2005 at 8:31 pmHey, after installing Tiger, QT7, and Final Cut Studio, I’ve noticed that my mpeg-2 playback capabilities under QT have disappeared. Also, my copy of MPEG Streamclip won’t work because it can’t find the component.
I thought that installing Final Cut Studio was supposed to unlock the QT mpeg-2 abilities.
Any ideas?

October 10, 2005 at 10:19 pmThat’s because our fine friends at Apple have removed it, because they want us to use Compressor.

October 10, 2005 at 11:03 pmI don’t think apple has removed it as everything works as it should on my machine (tiger fcp studio, etc.) Did you upgrade or do a clean install? A clean install will give you the best results. Have you installed all of fcp studio, or just fcp5?

I did a totally clean install, and according to Ken Stone, Apple removed the mpeg2 component from QT 7. Just relaying what I see in my computer and what I heard from Ken.

October 11, 2005 at 4:16 pmI think we are getting confused. The Quicktime MPEG-2 EXPORT (not playback) has been disbaled directly out of QuickTime 7. Playback of MPEG2 transport streams and m2vs should work just fine.

Huh? Mine is still there and functions as it always has. MPEG 2 still appears as a choice in Quicktime Player 7 on my machine. I have FCP 5 Studio and Quicktime 7.02

October 11, 2005 at 11:47 pmYou’re getting from some other source or through an old export component. It really is no longer in QT7, even if you have FCS installed.

October 12, 2005 at 3:41 amInteresting. I guess the Quicktime 7 installer missed un-installing it somehow….I feel so cheated 🙂
