I’m working with several editors on programs for exhibits. I’ve asked them all to give me mpeg-2 files. Some programs are HD, some SD. I’m getting MPEG-2 and M2V files. is there a significant difference in the formats?

also, I can’t seem to find a codec or plug-in for my laptop that allows me to playbeck these files. i have to transfer them to my edit station – what codec do I need? I have the DVIX bundles 5.2.1, but it doesn’t do the trick.

    Thanks,

    Geralyn

M2V is produced by Compressor, other apps, including those on Windows create files with the .mpg extension. If they are encoded by knowledgeable editors or compressionists there should be no difference between the file types.

Download Streamclip, which is freeware. Besides doing very nice transcoding, it also functions quite nicely as a player, and it will handle MPEGs of all flavors.

to ensure you can play virtually any video file format ever concieved, do yourself a favor and install VLC player and Perian. They’re both free, and you should never have an issue previewing your vids again.

You need to install FCS (Compressor or DVDSTPro) or buy the MPEG-2 QT Component ($19.99) to play and be able to re-encode these files.
Some flavors of MPEG-2 can be edited in FC without problem.
