  • MPEG-2 HD Broadcast output?

I have an HDV 60i NTSC sourced project, edited in Vegas 10. I have a client who requires the project as a 50i MPEG-2 Video Stream (Main Profile @ High Level) for broadcast delivery, 50Mbps (minimum) CBR.

Can I output this in Vegas 10 or must I go to a posthouse?

If so, please advise which codec would work best. Thank you.

Yes you can do this right in Vegas Pro 10. Use the MainConcept MPEG2 codec with the Blu-ray 1920×1080-50i, 25 Mbps video stream template. Press the Custom… button and change the bit-rate to CBR 50,000,000. If they don’t want the audio separate then go to the Audio tab and include the audio stream.

John, I greatly appreciate your reply and info!

I had done a sample render with this codec and it “appeared” that the conversion from 60i to 50i was smooth. Frame by frame, it looked very good.

Can I believe what I see in Vegas? Or, might Vegas give me an artificial depiction of the 50i output?

I ask because I have been told that this conversion from NTSC to PAL is a tricky one (though this belief may be from the old analog days).

You can trust what you see. Vegas is very good at conversions and does this very well with very little input from the end user. It just knows what to do and does it. That’s why I like it. 😉

Well, this is very good news. I assume that this is the best codec to use also for an HD MPEG-2 “NTSC” output?

I am getting the impression that as we move away from tapes, broadcasters are preferring the MPEG-2 format for HD delivery. Would you agree with this?

I have been archiving episodes with the Avid DNxHD codec, but have not seen any broadcasters that accept this format.
