MPEG 2 encoding
Hi everyone, I have questions regarding MPEG2 encoding.
I need to deliver to my client, a HD MPEG2 transport stream clip encoded at 50mbps. I have tried using compressor 2 but the max bit rate goes to just 29mbps. Does anyone know if compressor 3 can do it? Or are there other softwares out there that can encode MPEG2 at 50mbps? It needs to be 1920×1080.
Also, I have always thought that 25mbps is the recommended bit rate for encoding HD to MPEG2. Is this true and why are clients out there requesting such high bit rates?

My general go-to tool for more unusual MPEG-2 encodes is Rhozet Carbon. Most of that functionality is available in the much cheaper ProCoder.
You might want to check back with your client, though. Normally 50 Mbps MPEG-2 is HP@ML standard-def I-frame only 4:2:2. I’ve not heard of 50 Mbps long-GOP being used for HD archiving much, but you should get good quality at that bitrate.

as a Mac user, you might want to consider Episode. It’ll work as a standalone or as a plugin for Compressor 3. I haven’t pushed it above 25mbps but I believe it can hit 50mbps.
