  • MPEG-1/VCD vs. MPEG-2?

    Greetings!

I have a client who has asked me to convert a SD digibeta to the following spec:

    Video Format: MPEG-1/VCD
Stream: MPEG-2 Program Stream w/ elementary video/audio streams
    Bitrate: 2.8 – 3.5 Mb/sec
    Resolution: 640×480
    Aspect: 4:3
    Rate: 29.97
    Chroma: 4:2:0
    GOP Length: 15
    GOP Structure: IBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBB
    GOP Type: closed

My question: doesn’t MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 conflict with one another?? I don’t understand why the format is MPEG-1 and the stream is MPEG-2? It would seem that the specs suggest that they are looking for a MPEG-2 file, yes?

    Any feedback welcome!
    Thanks!
    Jason

    Hey, Dave-

Yes, I have, and have explained that MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 are a bit like apples and oranges, but they insist that they need a “MPEG-1/VCD at the MPEG-2 specs.”

Before I replied back to them, I wanted to do some fact checking with COW people to make sure I wasn’t giving out bad information.

So, do I have it right? This spec is kooky, correct? MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 are like apples and oranges, yes?

    Thanks!

No..they aren’t Apples and Oranges. MPEG 1 is more like the bitter Apples that grow in my background from the tree I never water and MPEG 2 are the Apples you buy from an organic apple farmer.

Your Client can’t have it both ways. Either they want MPEG 1 with its smaller resolution and bitrates or MPEG 2.
