  • Mp4 won’t open when dropped into Sony Vegas

Posted by Chris Willoughby on February 3, 2015 at 2:05 am

    Hi,

I can’t open Mp4s from my mobile phone in Sony Vegas. I used to be able to. It could be because I removed Quicktime from my computer, although I don’t use a mac.

Mp4s from my DSLR open fine.

There are lots of free downloads for progs that claim to supply codecs etc, but I don’t want viruses or adware or any nonsense.

I’m not sure what to do.

    Any advice would be great.

    Chris

There is a free utility program called MediaInfo. Can you show us a report from MediaInfo on your MP4 file. Or post a very short phone clip to Dropbox or similar.

MP4 files are generic containers and can contain just about anything.

Your DSLR MP4s are most likely AVC/H.264 video and PCM/AAC audio.
Sometimes MP4 files are actually Quicktime MOV files, just with an MP4 extension. Visa versa as well.

The phone files is most likely AVC video and the audio is the question.

    MediaInfo will tell all.

Sounds like you really need to reinstall QT. How about you put that MP4 through MediaInfo and see what is inside your MP4. If it says QT then you’ve found the issue.

Hey guys, thanks for your help. And mediainfo. I made sure I didn’t agree to some of its adware add-ons when i installed it. I hate removing that stuff. This is a screen grab it gave.

    Well done!

OK, now click on the “Go to Website of a Player of this file” button and report back.

    Cheers

    Yeah, you were right.

    It led to quick time.

I unistalled quick time, because I use windows and don’t- I didn’t think- I was using an apple products.

I’m downloading Quicktime, hopefully not from some dodgy counterfeit site putting viruses on my computer. 🙂

Eh? Why not go directly to the Official US APPLE site? – I did!

    NB:
Amongst the official SONY TechSpec for Vegas is the need to have the latest version of QT running.
