I was given an hour long mp4 that needs to be cut into small sections with the final destination being Youtube.

I imported the mp4 directly into FCP and cut my file into a bunch of smaller sequences. Now I want to export and this is where I get confused. I see the endless choices of export settings and I don’t want to start losing quality.

Should I have converted my mp4 into some other format before editing?

Should I just send each mp4 sequence directly to compressor and export it as an h.264?

I guess I’m asking for some input on the basic workflow.

    Thanks! – Sean

    Hi Sean,
You should have better started by converting the MP4 to a more editable codec. Beside not being supported by FC, one of the problems of editing MP4 is that being LGOPs, you have no frame accuracy.
If you have the sequence ready, change the sequence to 8b Uncompressed or Prores and export.
After you will need to convert that to MP4/H264 to upload to YouTube.

I agree with converting to something other than MP4 initially, however, there is a solution.

    Do you have FCP 7?

If so, then you have Compressor 3.5. Compressor has a Share option to share a file directly with youtube. It will do the encode to a youtube format for you. When you launch Compressor, do you get a wizrd that pops down from the top of the screen? Wait a few seconds for it.

Click on the sequence in the FCP browser, right click and select SEND TO COMPRESSOR. This will launch Compressor and you can use the wizard.

Conversely, you can use the YouTube preset to do a “manual” encode and upload.

If I wanted to convert my mp4 to a more editable codec before I begin editing, would you reccomend starting with compressor to change it? I assume converting to to ProRes is the best route to go.
    What about using MPEG Streamclip?

Sorry for the basic questions. I’ve been stuck editing the same format in and out (in Premiere Pro)for years. I’m now branching out to FCP and working with different formats. Is there a good resource to gain a good working knowledge of different formats and codecs?

    Thanks for the help!

    Hi Sean,
Mpgstreamclip is perfec to do the conversion and you can batch export.
Convert keeping all the original setting (time-base, size, pixels, field order..), just change the codec; and the audio as PCM 48Khz.
    Go Prores.
