I’m using a GoPro with my quadcopter. The GoPro is set to 1080 and 60fps.
After downloading the footage, the windows media player plays it back fine but if I put that clip in Vegas it barely moves and is extremely jerky so much so that it’s almost impossible to edit even in preview auto mode.
I’ve tried to set the properties of the clip to “disable resample” but that does no good.
    Any advice?
    Thanks
    Roger

Do your project properties match your source footage?
I can’t remember what kind of computer you have but it has to be a strong one (i7 with lots of RAM) to be able to handle footage like this.

I tried the footage to match but no go.
I think I’ll just set the GoPro for 30fps.

Roger, tangential question: What copter are you using for the GoPro? This is something I have an interest in exploring.

I’ve been flying a custom made quad for over a year but the camera gimble was never that steady and the shots were always a bit shaky so I couldn’t use all I shot.
I just purchased a DJI quad from Atlanta Hobby. They are fantastic about answering questions.
This is the one I got but the picture on that site is not correct as the camera and gimble are not the one pictured.
    https://www.atlantahobby.com/Store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=18034&idcategory=871

It comes with an 8″ monitor so I can see real time what the camera is seeing.
The most important part is the Zenmuse 3d 2h gimble. It’s lightning fast and produces absolute solid shots without gitter or movement from side to side or up and down.

The price of the gimble is lower that was was on that particular URL.

Feel free to call me if you like.

For me Vegas has great difficulty with 1080p60 files from my GoPro Black as well. A smart proxy helped me.

You can try converting the AVC to Cineform AVI using the free GoPro studio software. The Cineform should be a little easier to decode and it might help your setup.

It seems the Gopro Black 1080p60 files are most troublesome for the Vegas decoder.

Download a 1080p60 GH3 sample here and it plays back fine. Both are CABAC and the GH3 is higher bitrate.

Why is GoPro so hard to decode? I wish I knew of an analysis tool to list the frame sequence types of the video streams. I know they exist but are $$$.

Why not just put the GoPro footage on the Vegas timeline and save it as an MXF file or something like that instead of using the GoPro studio site to do it?

Yes, any other option getting out of the GoPro file will help. I have identified that the Vegas 12 AVC decoder has performance issues with GoPro AVC files. It mostly only shows on the most stressful files like 1080p60 on most machines.

There is a thread about this on the Sony forum and John Rofrano ran my example clips on VP11 and VP12 and VP11 was fine but VP12 was choking.

Choices for a change could be
    HDCAM SR Lite
    XAVC Intra
    XAVC-S
Mainconcept AVC at a high enough bitrate.
Cineform is a highbitrate Intra only format like HDCAM SR and XAVC Intra.

All of these are higher bitrate and quality than the GoPro files.
MPEG-2 formats (XDCAM EX, MXF HD EX) will probably lose fine detail quality to the GoPro AVC files while pixel peeping.

Thanks Norman for the info. I don’t know why this stuff can’t be more standardized. I sometimes feel my head is going to explode just trying to keep up with all the formats and constant changes.
It’s a nuisance having to render to a different format and with the GoPro files it seems to take forever.

Sad about the Vegas 12 decoder issue that shows up with GoPro files. We know it is not GoPro’s fault as VP11 is supposedly fine and other editors as well. Thanks John R for testing that!

I know from experience Sony Support is a black hole and reporting there is of little help. No harm in reporting anyway so I should.

There is one Sony developer trolling the Sony forum and that is the sole reason I started a thread about the GoPro Black issue hoping he would see it and maybe investigate at least a little bit.

I am not a video professional. I am a hack with a mountain bike and a GoPro having fun. So with Vegas having issue with my only camera really sucks. I am actually a systems level software developer by profession and have debugged Vegas a little from curiosity given all their quirks.
