Our staff of mostly HDSLR shooters edit in Final Cut (both Express and Pro) and make a Quicktime export of the finished timeline (not a Quicktime conversion). We convert to mp4, on the advise of Brightcove, for uploading to our newspapers web site. We use MPEG Streamclip for that re-sizing and conversion step.

We are having intermittent problems with the mp4 exports falling out of synch, even though the FCP export and the timeline itself are perfect. I have my doubts about using mp4 over h.264 Quicktime movies for uploading, but we are stumped about why this happens.

    Any thoughts?

I could be wrong, but I believe mpegstreamclip defaults to 23.98, instead of 23.976 as the frame rate. This causes sync issues. If you manually type in the frame rate, this issue will correct itself.

We’ve been leaving the field blank to let it use the frame rate of the original file. Most are shooting 30fps settings on their Canon HDSLR video (which has been corrected in camera to 29.97). Does that field need to be filled in to make sure it stays at that frame rate?

I would try it and see if your situation improves. I’ve heard that letting the software infer can sometimes lead to errors. I don’t generally use mpegstreamclip for those purposes, so I haven’t seen it there myself. I did read about something similar on the planet5D forums though.
