MP4 for Sony Vegas
Posted by Esmi Garcia on February 4, 2010 at 2:27 amI specifically got this program because I wanted something that would read MP4 files and it does not!
I have the Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9
What can I do to get it to work? I read something about codecs, but I know nothing about that. So if that is the solution could you describe how to use them in layman terms? Please
Thank You!

Where did you get your information from? In looking at the “official” Technical Specs for Vegas Movie Studio HD 9 from the Sony web site, I see no mention of MP4 files at all:
Capture and Import
- Import support for LEPC files
- Import support for MJPEG-encoded files
- Sony AVCHD import and edit support
- Import and export support for ATRAC3™, ATRAC3plus™, and ATRAC Advanced Lossless™ files
- ATRAC audio plug-in (Templates only)
- Gracenote® MusicID™ CD album recognition
- Import media from Sony® DVD Handycam® camcorders
- Batch capture and automatic DV scene detection
- PC connection via FireWire®, i.LINK™ connector or IEEE-1394 devices*
- Import pictures in BMP, GIF, JPG, and PSD formats
- Import AVI, DV, SWF, and MPEG 1 & MPEG 2 files
- Import audio files in WAV, MP3, AIF, CD Audio and PCA formats
Where did these MP4 files come from? Is the extension .mp4 or are you using the term “MP4” generically to mean mpeg4 files which may use any of a number of different codecs?

February 4, 2010 at 4:11 pmThe files came from my camera. I never had a problem with viewing the files before, I can only assume that because I downgraded to an XP the windows movie maker does not work with MP4, like the vista version did.
So basically I was informed that I should get a more ‘professional’ software for a more professional setting.
I simply put in the search engine what I was looking for and Vegas came up.They are video files, but only sound plays.
So its safe to say that the Vegas doesn’t work with MP4?

February 4, 2010 at 7:54 pmI have just started working with Mp4 files when I bought a Kodak ZI8 camera. Vegas Pro8 would not handle them well. I could download video files but no audio. Vegas Pro9 does edit Mp4 files, but I had to update Quicktime to get any stability.
Vegas Pro9 is a great program so you might want to step up to it.

It depends. If you can’t view them at all on your PC that I would say that you don’t have the proper codec. I would download the latest Quicktime as Kevin suggests because usually Quicktime handles MP4 files. If that doesn’t work you might want to download the x264fvw codec but that may only work with h.264 in AVI files.
Until you can view the files on your PC, you’ll never be able to edit them in Movie Studio. You need to install a codec that works with your camera files. Did the camera come with any CD or software? There may be a codec on there.

February 5, 2010 at 1:32 amThank you for the suggestion about the CD software. Im trying that now.
I did not have Quicktime on my old PC, is it possible that somehow I accidently changed my camera settings to shoot in MP4 if so, any idea as how to change it back?
I have the Quicktime software (no help), I’m assuming you mean Quicktime Pro which is something that I have to purchase, which I want to avoid because Im strongly under the belief that this can be fixed if I just change the settings, how could it work before and not now?!
Thank you again for your advice!

February 5, 2010 at 2:54 amYou should not have to buy Quicktime Pro to get the playback ability for Mp4.
You really do need to tell us what camera, and what settings you are using to go much further with this thread. Otherwise, we are all simply guessing at what the true problem may be, and we are only able to suggest general, generic ideas. It would also help to describe your computer and it’s components (mother board, processor speed, video card, RAM etc.

February 5, 2010 at 3:07 amThe Quicktime did provide playback (very slow), but I wanted conversion capabilities, which the ‘Pro’ provides. Having Quicktime does not make the videos any more usable on Sony Vegas or Windows Maker than before.
But Good point…. my camera: https://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/sony-cyber-shot-dsc/4505-6501_7-33521241.html
My computer (this is a temporary, probably will be stuck with it for months though, my old one crashed)

February 6, 2010 at 4:19 amMotion Jpeg for video may well be your problem. Rather than search for codecs perhaps you should tryone of two free video format covertors. Search “any video convetor” and “total video convertor” for a free download. I use them both for problem file and they work well. Did you get any software with your camera? Perhaps you may need to download a program from their website. Gook Luck and keep us advised.

February 6, 2010 at 4:22 amInstalling the software provided with camera fixed the problem! I basically had to hunt for the box, I’m glad I kept it =) Thank you for your very helpful tip!
