MP4 files and Vegas 8.1
Posted by Rick Wise on October 3, 2011 at 4:18 pmI find the frequently when I try to add an MP4 file to Vegas it tells me this is an unsupported file. The only solutions seems to be to shut down the computer and reboot. Other times it works just fine. Any solution to the negative message so I don’t have to keep rebooting the computer?

October 3, 2011 at 5:31 pmGood to hear from you, Steve. I’m still using Vegas 8 because it does what I need — usually. This sometimes on, sometimes off with MP4 files is a drag.

October 3, 2011 at 5:42 pm8.1 was Sony’s first attempt at a 64-bit version of the program and a lot of users found that it had a several bugs and jumped to Pro 9 as soon as it became available.
What version of QuickTime are you using? -

October 3, 2011 at 5:47 pmLol…Boy Rick, the only thing i could recommend to you at this point
is an upgrade, cause im sure you already tried everything else.On a personal note, i settled down on using only Vegas 9.0e
(the stablest version to me) and had no intention of
upgrading to another version anytime soon…Until i got some
footage from a client (using a new brand of camera) that i could
not let pass me by, and Vegas 9.0e could not handle it. I then
had to upgrade to Vegas 10 and everything went smooth sailing
after that……My two cents.Steve Rhoden

October 3, 2011 at 11:16 pmThanks, Steve. I think for my current needs — grabbing some scenes to present to students as examples of camera work etc. buying the $45 Vegas Movie Studio HD 11 might just do the trick. For this elementary work I don’t begin to need the full power of Vegas. I’ll try it first to see.
That there’s a version 11 for beginners certainly suggests Pro 11 should not be far behind.

October 21, 2011 at 9:38 pmThe cheapest consumer version fixed my immediate problem. Fortunately I was only trying out the free trial. Just as I suspected, Pro Version 11 came out, and for $140 I now have the full (upgrade from 8.1) deal. I know no one here could respond to my observation that if a consumer version 11 is out, the pro version must be coming soon, as you are sworn to secrecy.
Pro 11 handles MP4 files with no problems at all. And I am sure I will find that it easily handles a lot of other “real” video files well as well. Can’t wait to put it through its paces.
