I have Sony Vegas 11 64-bit. Also have quicktime installed. When I try to open or use an mp4 as the file to create the new project off of, I frequently get “The file is most likely corrupted or of an unknown format”. The file plays fine on the computer and opens fine on 5 other programs I have. Even converts fine with Microsoft Expression Encoder. I have a batch of these mp4 files, all from the same recording series, all converted to mp4 at the same time. All have thumbnails showing in Windows. I don’t get it. Any idea what’s going on? Some of these open in vegas and some don’t.

do you have a set of codecs installed on your pc? things like K-Lite Mega Codec or FFDShow? If not, try installing (I have both) and reboot thy pc. See if that works.

What’s going on is the MPEG4 format is an incredibly broad specification that no single program can support all of. Your MP4 files are probably using a Profile or Entropy Coding that Vegas doesn’t support. It may also be that the file is written in a non-standard way and while other programs can tolerate this error, Vegas cannot. Vegas is primarily tested with acquisition formats that come from video cameras. It sounds like you are trying to edit a delivery format. You will probably need to transcode your MP4’s into an MP4 format (or other format like M-JPEG, HDV, AVCHD, etc.) that Vegas can edit.

Ditto. I would NOT install a codec pak!!!

This is like taking every pill in your medicine cabinet hoping one of them will cure you. It never ends up well.

If you ever need a codec, only install the ONE codec that you need and only from a reputable source.
