  • mp4 export is squeezing SD video shot in squeeze mode

I recently shot some footage with an SD 4×3 camcorder using the squeeze mode to make it 16×9. I captured it using the DV widescreen mode and it edited as 16×9. When I went to export an .mp4 I selected the NTSC DV widescreen mode, 720×480. It exported a file whose window is 16×9 but it squeezed the video back to 4×3 instead of filling the window. I even changed the aspect ratio to 640×360, but all that did was stretch the player window even more, but the video was still squeezed. I need to make a DVD. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you want it for dvd export to mpeg2-dvd, that will honour the widescreen flag. And no re-encoding as you would have had with mp4.

It worked, thanks. I normally make an mpg2 anyway but I have a simple Mac DVD-burning software now that will make a DVD from any file, and so I started with .mp4. What I noticed, however, was that the .mpg2 was quite large, even for a two-hour video (8Gb) and so I had to lower the data rate quite a bit to get it down to 4Gb. I used the regular .mpg2 compression as well to see what would happen and it made a smaller file but it was more letterboxed than full 16×9, so I went with the DVD compression.
