Hi, could use some help figuring this out. I’m working in FCP 5.1.4 with an HDV 1080i60 project, aspect ratio 16:9. I’m trying to export an mp4 keeping the aspect ratio, going through File > Export > Quick Time Conversion, selecting MPEG-4. My exported files keep coming out squeezed (tall & skinny) seemingly no matter what options I select. Keeping aspect ratio via letterbox, via crop, via “fit within size.” I have tried different size settings, different video formats (basic vs improved) and different file formats (just for the record, what is the difference between mp4 and mp4 ISMA?)

So far, nothing has worked. Does anyone have the answer here? Much appreciated.

YOu want the frame size to be 16×9 which is 1920×1080.

You are editing HDV which is 1440×1080. You need to correct the aspect ratio on export.

Simple – but often asked question.

Open your new file in quicktime player. Click on ‘window’ in the menu bar then ‘show movie properties’. Click on the video track in the top of the box and the ‘visual settings’ tab and alter the ‘scaled size’ dimensions in the boxes on the right hand side of the box to the correct size (say 1920×1080).

Save the file (with the video on the first frame as it remembers this) and it will now play in a correctly scaled box (irrespective of the overall sizing) on any computer you play it on, including PC’s. I do this all the time for anamorphic videos, works great, unlike changing the export sizes…
