I have both the BlackMagic Intensity Pro and Matrox MX02 Mini installed in the same machine, and have been going back and forth, trying to figure out which works better.

I already dealt with the problem of seeing garbled compression artifacts and artifacting when watching AVCHD media playback. A thread on here clued me in to clicking “Program Monitor > Settings > Playback Resolution > Full” … when set to half or less, you see lots of garbage.

Most recently, I’ve been having issues playing back MP3 files that are mastered at full volume. Whenever a clip bumps against zero.

I had to work around this by creating WAV files of the exact same media. These, so far, seem to play just fine.

    Premiere CS5

Anyone have any thoughts on why MP3s crackle, or perhaps some other solution instead of converting?

Mp3 is highly compressed and comes in different flavours, converting to wave is the only solution.

    Hello Tim,

MP3 being a compressed format, working with it mastered to 0dB you run at risk that decompression approximations (there is always a little bit of approximation, quntization errors and such in a highly compressed formats as opposed to uncompressed audio like PCM wavs) may render some portion of audio slightly above zero, which causes crackle. To be on the safe side, it’s always advisable to leave some room — i.e. master audio to -3 dB, for instance, espacially when it’s known that MP3 format is going to be used.
