MP3 issue with Vegas Pro 14
Hopefully one of you wonderful people will be able to help me with this. I tried reaching out to customer support but they didn’t seem to understand the problem. ????
What: Whenever I import a MP3 file into Vegas 14 it distorts it on the timeline and it just sounds like buzzing. The waveforms are affected too. Exported audio is also distorted. No other audio is heard. It happens ANY mp3 file, WAV and FLAC files aren’t affected. I tried changing audio settings, installing mp3 codecs, using stereo and 5.1, restore defaults, reinstalling Vegas, but nothing seems to address the issue.
I can convert the files to WAV and import them and they sound fine, but I don’t want to have to do that forever.
When: My SSD died, so I had to reinstall everything on a new SSD. Windows, Vegas, everything was installed from scratch on the new SSD and I sent the old one in for repair. As soon as this happened the problem started.
Specs: Running Windows 10 Home Ver. 1703 (OS Build 15063.413) 64-bit off SSD, Vegas 14 (Build 252)

The distorted audio is a MP3, and the voice over you head is a WAV file. -

Are the MP3’s using variable bitrate or constant bitrate? I remember reading something about always using constant bitrate MP3’s because Vegas Pro had trouble with variable bitrate ones.
Also I would be careful of what mp3 codecs you may have installed. Vegas Pro doesn’t need any other mp3 codecs and something you have installed could actually be causing the problem. Codec Packs can really mess things up if you have any of these installed.
I have no problem with using the occasional MP3 with Vegas Pro but I usually use WAV files for my audio because of their higher quality.

Well the issue started before I installed any mp3 codecs, and didn’t get better after I tried a few. And I tried saving MP3’s to constant/variable/average bit rates in Audacity but it doesn’t seem to help.
Anyone else run into this? I’ll also note that I don’t seem to have the option to save audio files to MP3 in Vegas. I’m pretty sure I could before. -
I found it strange that I can’t render to MP3, so I looked around the files in the VEGAS folder and found that the mp3plug2.dll file is there, maybe it just isn’t recognizing it somehow? I’m not enough of a Grey Beard to know how to replace .dll files safely or if it would work. Might be a clue though.

My guess is that something on your system has broken the MP3 support in your Vegas Pro installation. You should be able to render to MP3 files and constant bitrate MP3’s should not be causing playback problems. It’s hard to say how you might fix it. I would start with re-installing Vegas Pro but if some other software is interfering with Vegas’ ability to work properly with MP3 files, that might not be enough.
I had a problem with Nero and Vegas Pro once. Some programs take over your PC like they own it and cause other programs to stop working. I had to uninstall Nero to get Vegas Pro working properly.

Interesting. Maybe I could try uninstalling all my audio editing programs, uninstall Vegas, then reinstall Vegas. Thanks John. Guess it’s worth a try. I’ll let you know how it goes.

FIXED IT! Thanks again John for pointing me in the right direction.
What I ended up doing was uninstalling all my audio editing programs (Audacity, Sony ACID), the uninstalling Vegas, cleaning system of all old Vegas files. Then I downloaded and reinstalled Vegas 14 Pro onto a DIFFERENT SSD. Then I tested it and it worked with all the MP3 files I could throw at it. No problems. Then I reinstalled all the audio editing programs and it still works.

Glad to have nudged you in the right direction but you figured it out in the end. Sometimes a clean re-install is all it takes. 😉
