  • MOV’s freezing in comps

Posted by Jason Rouleau on April 3, 2008 at 5:28 pm

This has been randomly happening to me for awhile, but when im using AE on my MACs, I will be using different MOV files to make my comps.

But sometimes, the MOVs will simply feeze on a random frame from that MOV. Its as if it was a freeze frame during the entire clip

This happens with several codecs and item properties. Some of my MOVs will have alpha layers, some wont. Some will be in JPEG2000, others in Apple Intermediate codec.

I just dont understand why it does that.

If I reboot AE, sometimes the MOVs will play again, or they will be frozen on a different frame.

ANyone else ever encounter the same problem? And hopefully found a solution?

I’ve tried pre-compositing and/or rendering them out to a different codec, but they still freeze.

    What is your system configuration?

are you seeing the freeze in final renders or ram previews?

if you are seeing it in final renders, are you able to see the frames if you stop playback and position the time cursor manually or by stepping through frames with the arrow keys?

if so, that may mean that the file/codec has a data rate that is exceeding your hard drives data rate. so the media is fine, it’s just that the drive can’t read fast enough to play the file…

if it is a ram preview problem, then you may be trying to preview by hitting the space bar rather than the zero on the numeric key pad. hitting ‘zero’ will cache the preview to ram, allowing for faster playback, ‘space bar’ will cache to disk, which may produce a slower playback. usually the playback doesn’t hold on one frame though, it just doesn’t playback in realtime.

    Actually, I’ve found a solution.

If I go to EDIT –> Purge —> All

the problem goes away. It eventually comes back but if I purge everytime its fine.

So I just need to purge before I render out my final version and everything works fine.

    Wierd problem though.

THis happened alot with all of Andrew Kramer’s stuff (Riot Gear, Evolution, etc.)

THAAAAANK YOU!!!! This has been driving me crazy. The only solution I could find was to quit AE and re-launch and that didn’t always work. Your purge solution isn’t perfect but it works A LOT better than anything else I’ve tried. Does anyone else know why this may be happening or is it just another ghost in the machine?

Purge All does the job for a lot of cases, but after dealing with this issue A LOT more frequently with working with HD footage, I’ve found that converting the source footage to a JPEG sequence first and then using those image sequences in my AE comps I get the frozen footage issue much less often.
