Last time I looked the HVX was about $5300.00 at B&H and now it includes a free 8GB P2 card. You should be able to get an HVX and 3 – 8GB p2 cards for $7500.00!

There is a workflow involved. But shooting in this format is FAR SUPERIOR to that of HDV. And much easier to work with.

November 21, 2006 at 1:32 amYes, but… there is no set!!! Ever shot on a working lobster boat in rough sea? There’s no laptop there, no sticks, no camera bag, there’s not really even room for me, never mind an assistant. How about on a coast guard cutter on patrol, or climbing a steep grade covered with snow following a rock sculptor, or shooting a live event in a public place? Don’t mean to rant, Shane, but the problem is a laptop can’t go where I go most times, and most times I go there myself, and there is no control of the shooting environment – you miss the shot, you are screwed. Sadly, this camera does not work with a p2 workflow for run & gun, it just doesn’t. It’s a camera primarily for indie filmmakers of a certain kind. But, the thing is, I KNOW the image is best in it’s class, that’s why I’m doing flips and twists to try & find a workaround to an essentially unworkable situation, why I’m so bummed that Panasonic priced me out of the p2 game, because if I could afford a pocketful of p2 cards, I’d buy ’em and be done with it. Even with the firestore, handheld becomes a real issue, with two wireless, a big battery, a bracket one and a shotgun in the mount. I’m in good shape, but not good enough to be solid enough for long enough.

November 21, 2006 at 2:53 pmWell said Stu – not to mention if you are in foreign lands… (which is where I often shoot).
On the plus side, in a controlled enviroment, the XL-H1 can capture uncompressed HD (via its HD-SDI output).

actually, the HVX-200 can do the same thing. We’ve tested it here directly into our Kona systems.

Superior. Not far superior, and not enough to overcome the limitations of trying to record hours of footage to P2 media outside the controlled conditions of a set. Not that much easier to work with either. Easier, but not much.
