I’m trying, via the Mocca tutorial and The Naam chapters in Adam Watkins book, to negotiate character rigging. (I’m using C4D ver. 8.2) I’m trying to wrap my head around the relationship between the mesh and the bone deformers when manipulating the bones.

Why, for instance, does the bone placement change when switching from the move tool to the bone tool, even when ‘fixing bones’ after using the bone tool? Should the process of setting up bones include using the move tool to move bones at all if so, and when? Or do I move the bones just using the bone tool, which only means moving the tips or bases of the bones, no rotation for instance. (I think.)

Anyway, is there a good sequential process to changing the bones positions in a visually logical way, aligning it to what I see as the mesh, and getting predictable results?

Practice makes perfect… find the method that works best for you…

I like to use the bone tool to draw the bones, and then the move tool and rotation tool if you need to, for fine adjustments.

In all honesty I would get a different program if you are interested in character animation, unless your working with MoCap, since Cinema’s IK tools are a bit weak.

If you are really interested in understanding bones and IK… and how to get realistic deformation, the best advice is to read read read…

for example ligwww.epfl.ch/~baerloch/papers/thesis.pdf read this its only a 150 pages,
    wscg.zcu.cz/wscg2003/Papers_2003/G61.pdf

these two papers will get you started, if you want more look on google, or I can give you many more suggestions I have many boxes of such papers.

Simon, thanks for the .pdf tip. Right now,I’m really trying to get my head around the basics with this program, so as I move things around, either with the bone tool or the move tool, I understand what I’m doing and why bone placement looks different depending which tool I’ve got. These are basics to this program. (Can’t afford another program and I like C4D.)

Naam refers to the problem, I think, when (s)he says you should fix bones when going between the bone and move tool, but the bone placement still seems to change between the two views. (i.e. same viewport, just switching tools.)

For the scene I’m currently doing (and is due in 2 weeks), I’ll be using mostly simple hand gestures and a little torso bending, so I’ll probably stick to regular IK and the pose mixer for the hands. I hope by the time I get to serious character animation, Maxon will stop fooling with the ‘cool factor’ modules and do some more development work in the character rigging area.
