    Hi…

I am trying to use my laptop to sit and sort footage and then take it all into my mac pro for editing. I don’t seem to be able to get this right. For instance….. I want to hide/favourite/write notes/keywords and multicam clips/favourite/keyword etc.. all ready for dropping into the timeline later on the mac pro. However when I try and copy the Final Cut Event folder, into the same folder on the mac pro, this does not work… at least on importing?

What is the correct work flow? do I have to make a project file to go with this (even with nothing on the timeline) and MOVE Projects with clips to a external drive and then the Mac Pro should find it or what?

    Thanks.

    Thanks for all your help

    Hi, Anita.

How are the two machines connected?

How are you getting media from the laptop to the MacPro?

They are on the same network. so I copied from the finder to finder. maybe I should use external hard drive to move these Event files anyway…. it took too long to be practical…. Should I try via external hard drive?

[anita sancha] “They are on the same network. so I copied from the finder to finder. “

And you put the Event folder in your “movies” folder on the MacPro?

If you use an external hard drive, you will simply “Copy” the Event to the external using FCPX, plug in the external to the MacPro, launch FCPX, and everything will be ready to go.

“Either way, you do NOT want to be moving/copying FCP files (be it events or projects) MANUALLY in the Finder. Big no-no. That could quickly and easily lead to corrupt/unloadable events/projects due to ID conflicts or the likes. This is something you always want to do from within FCP via the “Move”, “Duplicate”, Merge” etc. commands.”

This not not really complete or might be a bit misleading.
Copy and Move in Finder are two totally different things – as the words say. So as long as you move your events or projects (and the media) in Finder to the right location everything is fine. No ID conflicts. But you might need to reconnect media. Latter can the same within FCPX and the “Move”, “Duplicate”, Merge” etc. commands.

“And yes, editing from an external drive is always the way to go. Editing from your boot drive is not a good idea.”

That’s definitively true and should be the standard way to work.
