I have a scene in which i want to have ships fly over a subject on the ground. There is a particular shot where the camera is shooting downward from directly above the subjects. Is there any way to add a shadow that I can adjust to a certain shape (shape if the ships), and have move across the frame? The shot requires the shadow of the ships only, so i don’t need to match it to any motion of rendered ships

duplicate your ships layer. then turn your ship to black (with levels or color correction or so, as long as the ships’s shape becomes black). then bring that ship layer into the right position on the ground(flat, on to the ground) and lower the opacity a bit.
you must draw a mask around the ship’s shap firs, or else the background wil become black to 🙂
it works much nicer with a person/object on a green screen with this technique.
