  • Moving several layers in time

Posted by Jorge Arango on September 26, 2008 at 4:46 pm

I have a composition with several layers but now I want to insert another layer at the beginning.

Is there a way to move all (or some) of my layers, say, 10 seconds to the right. If it can be done numerically, better yet.

    Thank you,

the best way may be the by hand method…. position the time cursor to the time you want to move the layers to (10 sec), select all the layers you want to move, then hit opt-[ (mac) or alt-[ (pc). this will move all the layers to the same time (10 sec).

if they were staggered (not all starting at the same point) and you wanted them to move relative to each other (maintain their timing), then move the cursor to the new start point of the first layer, select all the layers and then shift-drag them until the first layer’s in-point snaps to the cursor.

yet another way… in the upper right corner of the timeline, click the little triangle. select columns>in to show the in-point column for the layers. now you can select any layers and enter an in-point time and they will all move to that point (however, not relative to each other).

I usually highlight the layers I want to move, then (on PC), I use alt+page up or down to nudge 1 frame left or right…adding shift moves in increments of 10……sounds like a lot, but hold it down and it goes quite quickly, and also keeps time relation between the nudged layers. I also like this method when zoomed in the timeline and the layer’s tile is not visible.

    Thank you Kevin,

In the first paragraph you say that “then hit opt-[ (mac) or alt-[ (pc).”. You have to press option (alt) and another key?

yes, hit option (or alt) and [ (left bracket) together and the in-points of the selected layers should move to the current time (the timeline cursor).

Oh, sorry Kevin hadn’t seen the brackets.

Thank you, Mark, nudging seems like a good option.

sorry, i should have type ‘left bracket’ out, it would have made more sense…
