  • Moving projects folder to a new ssd

Finally having time to do video editing again.

I just added a new 250 GB SSD drive to my PC. I want to move all ongoing (and several older but never finished) projects from a slow HDD to this SSD, and put the media cache and cache files (and whatever else is saved there) from the default location in C: to this dedicated SSD as well.

Is there a way how to move al those things in one go without having to go into each project and manually change settings?

Further info: the PC is older but still very quick, with 16GB RAM, but now the files are stored on a WD Green drive, very reliable but slow.

I am using a bought version of Premier Pro CS6 and all files are stored locally, I never use CLOUD for anything.

No idea how this works on a PC but on my Mac I keep everything regarding a project in a single folder and simply drag the folders off to an external disk for backup. Then I drag them back onto my internal drive when I need to do a major update for a client. Or do the update on the drive itself. My projects aren’t that huge.

What will save you time and space if a project is completed is to export it using Project Manager…. it can export all the assets but ONLY the ones being used on the sequences you select. I’ve also done this with no issues.

Hope this helps. Others more experienced than me may have better solutions and precautions for you.

Dennis, thanks for the reply. My problem is I started video editing about 10 years ago during a project (not PR projects but “normal” projects) our non-profit did for the Czech Ministry of Environment. At that time, I did not pay enough attention to storage and file locations. As result, I have all the media cache on my C: drive (also SSD, only as OS drive) and the rest on a slow WD green drive and some on a quicker WD blue drive.

Since then, I did a few times some other editing but the last five years that work got snowed under.

Now I am starting again, and want to have things organized like you have, all together on a fast disk.

However, PR opens up and always wants a new or existing project opened, I cannot get it to open just as a blank space. So I can change locations in one project at the time, but not the entire PR work folder.

So how to move the PR folder in one go to the new SSD and collecting the other saving and media cache locations in the same move? Is that possible at all?

One option, probably the simplest, would be to leave the media cache and cache files on C: (also a quick SSD) and only move the rest to the second SSD. And then just leave everything in the folder as it is until I open a PR project. If it starts shout for a missing file, I can go looking for it. Not ideal, but probably the best, or are there other solutions?

I think if you delete your local pref file you start fresh.

I know there is a start-up keyboard command for this.

Just have to google it 🙂
