  • Moving markers from clip to sequence and back

    Thank you for any help.

I am dying to move markers between clips and sequences. I love being able to see markers notes in the sequence canvas but also like moving clips between sequences. This is a big documentary project and this feels soo helpful.

I’ve seen the some threads about this but am continuously lost. I’ve tried exporting markers to text file, copied and pasted smoothly to excel converted excel to XML, but then cant import back into fcp 7.

I’ve also tried using markerTool but that program is a mystery to me. It gives me the option to drop markers from video track to sequence track… then asks me to open a file, i open my fcp project file and the program quits.

I see there is a $70 program called excelogger which might turn excel XML into fcp readable XML but the last guy posting on creative cow, talking about excelogger couldn’t make that application work for him.

I’m having trouble conceiving of ways to stay organized with out this system of marker notes that show up in the canvas but can be attached to clips and moved about. Ideally the markers on clips would also show as text in the canvas but that seems out of the question. Can anyone guide me through this… and/ or suggest other workflows. Would be greatly appreciated.

ME TOO. Too bad it isn’t possible yet. FCP 7 made the markers MOVE when you cut or inserted video, but other than that, they are either tied to the clip and not visible in the canvas, or in the canvas and not tied to a clip.

I don’t know of any software that will make this work.

Thanks for the reply. Any luck exporting markers out to text files and then importing them back in as a way to move markers from sequences to clips and back?

Searching through the forum trying to do the same thing as Jesse, I’m wondering if anyone knows of any advances in marker technology in the past 2 years since this was posted…?

I know this is a really old thread and possibly no one cares anymore but i’m sure if someone finds this they will benefit from knowing that the tool mentioned by Jesse in his first post called markerTool does in fact do the job of lifting markers from the video track and moving them to the sequence level. First you must export the sequence to an XML file by right clicking on the sequence or using the “file” > “export” menu. Then inside markerTool select the operation you want to perform EG “Lift video markers to sequence level” and open the XML file you exported. It does the process completely silently but if you re-import your markers to FCP they should now have moved.

I used this tool to great success when trying to get a lot of video markers from 50 or so sequences into Adobe Audition to export the marker ranges to MP3. Apple products are very poor tools for functionality, they have such limited versatility. Adobe Creative Suite has saved me so many hours after the laborious task of getting files from poor software such as FCP into the Adobe CS.

    Hi Felix,
I know your post is from a while ago but just in case you are still out there, perhaps you have some tips. I am using MarkerTool and you’re right, the markers do get added to the sequence level. This is great! BUT now the clips on the timeline do not reconnect to their Master Clips. I tried exporting an XML with Master Clips and then they do connect to those new Master Clips that are imported when the XML is imported. But I cannot use this function because I have several sequences that connect to the same Master Clips and I do not want to end up with tons of Master Clips that all connect to different sequences. Is there anyway for the XML to be imported and connect to the old Master Clips?
    Thanks
    Milena
