  • Moving an animated mask

Posted by Chris Heuer on September 16, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Hello! Dumb question, I think! (because I know I’ve done this before). I have a mask created by using Auto Trace. It has a keyframe for “Mask Shape” on every frame.

I would like to move the entire mask without loosing the animation. I am currently clicking on the Mask Shape property to highlight every keyframe. Then I click on the Mask and move it, but it only moves the mask on the current keyframe. I would like to move the mask on all keyframes but not loose the animation that is already happening.

I know I’ve done this but am currently stumped (not enough sleep!)

    Any help would rock!

    Thanks, Chris

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately, I am using this for the Reshape effect which only uses masks from the layer the effect is applied to. I want to roto people, duplicate the mask, shift it 10 – 12 pixels and warp it over into the 2nd mask using Reshape. I’m faking 3D on old 2D footage, I’ll let you know how it works!

I have done this before (maybe I slid the mask on every keyframe!?). Since I’m using Autotrace there is a keyframe on every frame. I’m not doing that! If you know of any tricks I’m forgetting, I’d love to hear them. At this point, I think an expression (Beyond my level) might be the only way. Maybe an Expression Control setup the right way.

I’ll post over there as well!

Thanks, any other wisdom is much appreciated!

Hello! Just checking in to revive this topic. I’m still stumped. After Effects needs a “Mask Offset” property.

To refresh, I have an animated mask (with a keyframe on EVERY frame). I want to duplicate it and slide the duplicate mask a few pixels to the right, but not loose any of the animation already on the mask.

I’m beginning to think this is not possible without moving the mask on every keyframe.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY concur: AfterEffects needs a “Mask Offset” property.

I would add it should be something that animates and should work with Expressions, just like any other position property.

As far back as v6.5 I thought this was missing. Thought maybe it would be there now, but on CS4 still no joy. :o(

Or are we both missing something?

Not missing anything. I’ve checked here, with AE enhancers, and even with a couple of Industry/AE gurus. It’s not currently possible.

A friend of mine knows one of Adobe’s upper echelon. He’s supposed to get me in touch with an Adobe software engineer (I think that’s what he called it). If this happens, hopefully we can make some progress there.
